DENTAL HYGIENE

Treatment is good, prevention is better

The annual professional tooth cleaning ensures a long life for your teeth and saves you high treatment costs in the long term. Let yourself be advised individually and experience dental hygiene completely painless in our dental practice in Zurich.

When is dental hygiene necessary?

When you visit the dentist, you automatically think of pain, drilling and root canal treatments. But the first step to healthy teeth is dental hygiene. Regular and professional teeth cleaning helps to minimize bacteria in the oral cavity and to prevent tooth decay. But when is teeth cleaning really useful?

Teeth cleaning is advisable if deposits of dyes or calcareous minerals have formed on the teeth that you can no longer get away with your daily dental care with a toothbrush or dental floss. This bacterial plaque must be removed to avoid long-term damage.

However, many patients also come to our dental practice in Zurich to have their teeth cleaned for aesthetic reasons. Dyes in coffee, tea, red wine and other foods can lead to unsightly brown or gray discolouration and significantly worsen the aesthetics, especially in the area of the incisors.

More insidious, however, are the calcareous deposits, which mainly arise in the places where our salivary glands expel the very mineral-rich saliva. These calcifications that then arise in the oral cavity are also called "tartar". Due to the particularly rough surface of the tartar, bacteria in the oral cavity feel very comfortable in it. If you clean your teeth every day with a conventional toothbrush, you will not be able to remove the bacteria because they can hide optimally in the tartar. As soon as the tartar is not removed for a long period of time, it can become dangerous. After a while, it can also develop below the gums and cause gingivitis. Later this leads to a regression of the bone that supports the tooth (periodontal disease). Ultimately, this leads to tooth loosening and then to the loss of the affected teeth.

Regular, professional teeth cleaning is an absolute must for a healthy smile.

How does the dental hygiene treatment work?

The dental hygiene treatments are carried out by our well-trained hygiene team. Professional dental hygiene uses the latest technology and efficient cleaning methods to achieve the best possible result. Thanks special Hand instruments, ultrasound instruments or an AirFLow powder jet device, we gently and carefully remove stubborn deposits and discoloration in our dental practice in Zurich.

In our dental practice you have various options for professional teeth cleaning. You can choose between treatment with our prophylaxis assistants and our dental hygienists.

Our prophylaxis assistants remove plaque from your teeth that is above the gums. Since you do not have to treat below the gums, this tooth cleaning is also cheaper. It is suitable for young and adult patients without deep gum pockets.

In contrast, the HF dental hygienist also cleans the deep gum pockets. This is usually done under local anesthesia so that the treatment is painless for the patient. Usually not even a syringe is used. As a rule, only an anesthetic gel is required, which is applied to the gingival pockets.

Healthy teeth are our passion. Our goal is to prevent receding gums, pain and tooth loss from becoming an issue for you through regular cleaning. Take preventive measures and avoid long-term damage to your teeth.

We would also like to offer patients suffering from gingivitis a gentle therapy tailored to their individual needs.

The duration of professional teeth cleaning / dental hygiene is between 30 and 60 minutes. The time required depends on the number of teeth, the current oral hygiene and the number of complicated positions of the teeth.

The more deposits the prophylaxis assistant or dental hygienist discovers, the longer the treatment will take.

As a rule, a specially trained employee in our dental practice cleans your teeth. Every dentist can also do a professional tooth cleaning if necessary. The employee can be a prophylaxis assistant (PA) or a dental hygienist (DH). The prophylaxis assistant is only allowed to work supra-gingivally (i.e. above the gums), the dental hygienist also sub-gingivally (below the gums, in deep gum pockets).

The dental hygienist (DH) is specially trained in the treatment of periodontal patients and works closely with the dentist.

For patients with healthy gums, teeth cleaning by a prophylaxis assistant is recommended, as this is cheaper and the cleaning result is identical.

For patients with chronic gingivitis or for smokers, we recommend having their teeth cleaned by a dental hygienist, as this enables the best possible long-term result for the patient to be achieved in collaboration with the specialist dentist for periodontics.

How often you have professional teeth cleaning / dental hygiene carried out depends on your individual risk. Is there already an inflammation of the teeth and gums? Do you often have tooth decay? If the body's immune system is burdened by chronic diseases - e.g. diabetes - professionals should clean their teeth more often. Dental plaque and plaque affect each patient very differently. Your dentist at ZurichDental will be happy to discuss the individual risk with you and recommend a rhythm for teeth cleaning in order to keep your own teeth healthy over the long term.

Investigate thoroughly beforehand and determine the risk

In order to be able to assess the individual oral hygiene and to determine the patient's personal risk of illness, a thorough examination of the teeth and mouth is always required before professional tooth cleaning / dental hygiene. From a dental point of view, this enables potential danger spots and bacterial deposits to be detected and made visible. For example, if your doctor finds soft and hard plaque such as tartar on the patient's teeth, it is an indication of an increased risk of tooth decay or periodontal disease. The result of the examination determines the further course of treatment. With the help of various devices and instruments, a specially trained employee gently removes discolorations and soft or hard deposits (plaque, tartar) on the accessible tooth and tooth root surface and between the teeth. Prevention is the best way to keep your smile fresh and healthy.

Professional teeth cleaning / dental hygiene is generally recommended for every patient. Why? Because people can only reach 70 percent of the surface of their teeth by cleaning their teeth every day at home. However, people who are already ill, who have sensitive teeth or who can only care for their teeth to a limited extent benefit in particular. This includes patients with dentures, fixed braces or with inflammation of the gums. But also elderly people or patients with physical limitations whose manual skills in oral hygiene are limited.

For patients who have already had periodontitis / periodontosis treated, the regular professional removal of plaque is an important measure to ensure the success of the treatment. Take preventative measures for a bright smile.
