When

Wisdom teeth are located far back in the row of teeth in an anatomically very narrow situation. Due to this restricted space, the teeth can often not be cleaned adequately. Therefore, even in a normal position, statistically speaking, they develop tooth decay or gingivitis more often than teeth in the anterior region.

In addition, due to the total space available in the jaw and its late growth, these teeth often do not make it to the occlusal plane but are wedged between the last tooth and the jawbone.

This lagging behind and the associated shifting very often result in unpleasant situations with slight discomfort such as pressure sensation, tooth displacement or bad taste / bad breath up to severe pain due to inflammation of the boil and abscesses.

How

After discussing the patient's wishes or the treatment needs due to illness, we will put together a treatment program that is individually tailored to you.

We will decide together with you whether the procedure will be performed under local anesthesia, twilight sedation or general anesthesia.

All operative interventions are carried out by us in specially equipped surgery rooms and with the most modern devices and instruments.

We attach great importance to freedom from pain and gentle treatment of our patients.

costs

The costs for a wisdom tooth removal depend on the individual patient situation and the degree of displacement of the wisdom teeth.

We would be happy to prepare an individual offer for you. A special x-ray image, the orthopantomogram, is a prerequisite for an offer. You can bring this with you or make a brief examination.

Wisdom tooth removal doesn't have to hurt anymore.

More about wisdom tooth removal

The wisdom teeth belong to the molars of humans. In contrast to the other permanent molars, wisdom teeth usually only appear in people between the ages of 18 and 22 - the name of these teeth results from this fact. While the formation of wisdom teeth does not cause problems for everyone, it can cause discomfort if the jaw is too small to accommodate these additional teeth.

Characteristics of wisdom teeth

Wisdom teeth differ from the rest of the molar teeth in terms of various features - for example, some wisdom teeth do not have four, but three or five cusps. The roots of wisdom teeth are also often more pronounced than the roots of other molars. In addition, wisdom tooth roots are often curved or intertwined.

Not everyone has the potential for wisdom teeth. In some people, on the other hand, not only the usual 4 (2 each on the lower and upper jaw), but up to 8 wisdom teeth are formed. Since wisdom teeth - starting from the incisors - are each in the eighth position, the teeth are also known in dentistry as the so-called figure 8, the middle incisor is accordingly tooth 1.

Possible complications when removing wisdom teeth

The eruption of wisdom teeth into the oral cavity can lead to different dental problems. If wisdom teeth are created on a person, but do not enter the oral cavity, we also speak of a so-called Retention. If wisdom teeth only partially succeed in penetrating the jawbone / oral mucosa, it is one of them Partial retention the speech.

If the wisdom teeth remain completely in the jaw, this is often symptom-free for affected patients. In contrast, partially retained wisdom teeth are often crooked in the jaw and have contact with the bacteria in the oral cavity. Despite the breakthrough into the oral cavity, these partially retained wisdom teeth are very difficult to clean with a toothbrush. Transverse wisdom teeth can shift the remaining teeth, so that the affected person Misaligned teeth enter. In addition, gum pockets form more quickly on partially retained wisdom teeth, in which bacteria can lodge. The consequences include, among other things, germ-related Inflammatory processes on the gums, which, if the disease progresses, occasionally also spread to the cheek and / or masticatory muscles. Since wisdom teeth that have not fully entered the oral cavity are also often adjacent to their neighboring teeth without spaces, there is an increased risk of caries in the latter. Furthermore, transverse whiteness teeth can resorb adjacent teeth or dissolve the neighboring hard tooth substance.

Questions and answers about wisdom tooth removal

Advantages of side-by-side tooth removal:
The side-by-side removal of wisdom teeth gives the patient the opportunity to use the untreated side to chew after the operation.

Disadvantages of side-by-side tooth removal:
Second intervention necessary

Advantages of removing all wisdom teeth in one session:
In our dental practice in Zurich, we use very gentle measures that enable the gentle removal of all wisdom teeth in just one operation. This shortens the follow-up treatment and downtime for the patient as a whole. For this reason, many of our patients prefer to have all of their wisdom teeth removed once.

Disadvantages of removing all wisdom teeth in one session:
Possibly a little more swelling as both sides are affected.

CONCLUSION: For more anxious patients, we recommend removal of the wisdom teeth in one sitting. This can possibly result in a sedation or GENERAL ANAESTHESIA respectively.

After the treatment you should take some physical rest for 2 to 3 days. When you are ready to go again depends, among other things, on your well-being and the scope of treatment. In a comprehensive consultation, we would be happy to explain the optimal behavior after the wisdom tooth removal.

As a rule, the Swiss health insurance company bears the costs if there is a medical need for the wisdom tooth operation. This is the case, for example, with tooth cysts or danger to neighboring teeth. We would be happy to inform you in our practice whether there is the possibility of assuming the costs in your individual case.

Basically, one of the most important issues for us is that all treatments at ZurichDental are painless. In our clinics we have various sedation and anesthesia options in order to make the treatment as pleasant as possible for each of our patients. You will not feel any pain during treatment under local anesthesia, nitrous oxide or general anesthesia. After the treatment, there may be some pain in the wound. However, we will provide you with sufficient pain reliever medication and cool packs to cool the treatment area. We recommend our patients to cool the treatment area for a while at home and to use conventional pain medication if pain occurs.

After the wisdom teeth have been removed in our practice, we recommend that our patients take 2 to 3 days of physical rest. It is best not to plan any important appointments or stays abroad during this time. Normally, you can resume work after this short break. In the first week after the wisdom tooth operation, you should refrain from direct sunlight, saunas, intense exercise and smoking.

Wisdom teeth that cause complications do not always need to be removed. If a wisdom tooth that has completely entered the oral cavity is impaired, but not the rest of the teeth in a set of teeth, but is itself affected by moderate damage such as caries, tooth-preserving medical treatment steps are possible depending on the extent of the damage. We therefore always make the decision for or against a wisdom tooth extraction in our clinics in Zurich on a case-by-case basis and in dialogue with our patients.

If the wisdom teeth are misaligned, have partial retention and / or are retained, we recommend their prophylactic removal between the ages of 17 and 25, e.g. if a lower wisdom tooth is severely inflamed, surgical removal is usually not possible due to bacteria being carried into the blood (bakeremia / sepsis) take place on the same day. After the age of 25, we recommend removing wisdom teeth only in the event of their symptoms or concomitant diseases on the tooth.

If you are unsure about the usefulness or necessity of removing your own wisdom teeth, we will be happy to advise you on the basis of a dental examination of your teeth.
